How to Site a Kitchen Garden?

Here are some tips for choosing a location for a kitchen garden.

1. Site your kitchen garden near the kitchen if the area available near your kitchen offers good growing conditions.

2. Choose a site that is in full sun during the growing season. (See ‘eHow to Understand Your Site’s Solar Orientation.’) If you are in a cold climate, a site that thaws early will allow you to prepare your beds earlier.

3. Select a site that will permit access to a storage shed so that equipment can be easily deployed.

4. Opt for a site with excellent drainage.

5. Pick a site that can be completely cleared of existing vegetation, including tree roots.

6. Use a site that is not visible from the formal rooms of your house unless you plan to make an ornamental vegetable garden or ‘potager.’

7. Design an ornamental vegetable garden to give you more flexibility in choosing a location.

8. Choose a site that can be protected from deer if they are pests in your area. A utilitarian fence serves this purpose well, but you might not want it to be visible from the house or street.
